Developing practical nursing skills: foundations for nursing and healthcare studentsAbstract
This chapter will focus on assessment in relation to mental health, however, it is likely in practice that you will be assessing both mental health and physical health combined. Someone may attend your service for a physical health complaint but present with a mental health problem and contrariwise. This chapter will also suggest how health care workers can increase their understanding of mental health, mental ill health and undertake a mental health assessment. Whilst it is acknowledged that the purpose of assessment is to inform the referral to the mental health specialists who will complete a full assessment, it is also important, that the information communicated is accurate and demonstrates that the person is currently safe and receiving quality care.Citation
