There are two subfamilies of ABC uptake systems for amino acids in bacteria, the polar amino acid transport family and the hydrophobic amino acid transport family. We consider the general properties of these families and we examine the specific transporters. Focusing on some of the best-studied ATP binding cassette transporters we also examine the mechanism of amino acid uptake, paying particular attention to the question of bidirectionality of solute movement.Citation
